Peace Ambassador to address Brookhaven Rotary Club on September 11

Sebastián Vélez, a 20-year-old** student from Medellín, Colombia--and the 2019-20 GRSP Student hosted by the Rotary Clubs of Brookhaven and North Atlanta--will address the Brookhaven Rotary Club on Wednesday, September 11. Sebastián will share some details about his home in Colombia and about his hopes for the GRSP year.

The Georgia Rotary Student Program (GRSP) is not an exchange or an academic scholarship. While each student does enroll at a Georgia university, attends classes and maintains satisfactory academic standing, GRSP is a peace program. This program is unique in the world of Rotary and is supported by all Rotary Districts in Georgia.

The Georgia Rotary Student Program was the brainchild of Will Watt, a Rotarian from Thomasville who in 1946 wanted to create a peace program for young people from Europe. GRSP has since expanded to bring students from all over the world to Georgia to meet each other, get to know life as a young person in the U.S., make life-long friendships with people from the U.S. and around the world, and promote greater understanding and peace among people from different nations.

** A previous version of this story listed Sebastián's age incorrectly as 22.

First Woodward Reading Day - September 25

Send Bryan Katz an email to participate in our Club's first reading day at Woodward Elementary School (map here).

We are once again partnering with the Ferst Foundation to send each of Woodward's approximately 150 PreK and Kindergarten students home with a book in his or her hands several times per school year.

As part of that project, we also need each Rotarian in the Club to visit Woodward and read to children on one of our Club's scheduled days during the year.

Many members have identified this as one of the most rewarding projects in which they have participated.

Per Service Chair Bryan, "We'll start around 7:45am and should end by 8:30. There are 2 Pre-K classes and 5 Kindergarten classes so it would be great if we can have 7 volunteers."

Laws of Life Workshop approaching

The annual Laws of Life essay contest is an effort that our Club proudly supports. There will be a workshop and luncheon on September 27.

Because this newsletter format does not always make it clear when text is a link, please use this link to learn more about Laws of Life and this workshop:
